Here and now begins what will be the first regular post here at Cut! No, no, no…
What is it? Call it a “what’s on” for Melbourne’s cinemas, or not. Basically it’s a week o’ screenings worth going to, listed here every thursday (I know it’s friday), some of which might be widely known, some less so.
You screening something? Let me know. You heard of something? Let me know.
See you at these:
FRIDAY
Irma Vep, ACMI, 10pm… Oliver Assayas’ knowing and funny tribute to lots of things, among them Maggie Cheung, silent serials, and PVC.
Ghost In The Shell, Hoyts Melbourne Central, 11:40pm… Genuinely amazing canonical anime classic. You’ve seen it, but probably not on a screen to rival the Hoyts fuck-off-mega-screens. Also, Ghost In The Shell 2 Saturday nite, same time/same place.
SATURDAY
Bush Christmas, ACMI, 4pm… I won’t be going, but you might.
SUNDAY
Muppet Christmas Carol, ACMI, 10:30am/1pm… Don’t make me explain this.
WEDNESDAY
Wattstax, ACMI, runs kinda randomly until Jan 13th… Film itself: an awesome spectacle of music/politics, and a commemorative 1972 tribute to the 1965 Watts riots. It’s also the first screening of ACMI’s new experiment, namely the expansion of their First Look series (wherein they would screen a newly restored/discovered archive title, like, twice) to something they’re calling Long Play (same thing, lot more screenings).
